Retail Pharmacy Technician


Job Responsibilities


Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist working within a licensed pharmacy, performs the technical, nonjudgmental aspects of medication preparation, distribution, record keeping and inventory control. Tasks are subjected to sequential or final verification by a registered nurse or a registered pharmacist.


The role of the Retail Pharmacy Technician in the practice includes both the direct technical procedures of drug admixture and preparation, and the supply and equipment management

  • Prepare the pharmaceutical agents ordered in the correct dose, for the correct patient, and to provide those drugs to the clinical staff for administration
  • Utilizes aseptic technique in medication preparation
  • Prepares medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a registered pharmacist
  • Working with quality control with all Oncology/Chemotherapy medication in the Oncology department
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information. Verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Checks all orders for insurance approval before admixing. Under a professional’s supervision, admixes drugs within OSHA guidelines and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents. Maintains indigent patient drug program as assigned. Counts controlled drugs weekly and maintain records
  • Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment in the preparation of chemotherapy agents
  • Dates, concentration specified, and initials on vials held in storage.
  • Verifies expiration dates on drugs and supplies utilized in practice
  • Responsible to work with the nursing staff to maintain the patient education supplies used within the practice
  • Maintain current drug information and MSDS sheets. Properly disposes all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs. Cleans hood daily or as stated in policy and procedures.
  • Receives and shelves medications. Assist lead pharmacy technician in ensuring that standard drug supplies are an adequate supply in all departments. Prepares labels. Files and prepares billing. Performs efficient data entry into system used by pharmacy and admixture.
  • Reviews each shipping invoice and compares the invoice with the billing documents for each location

Specific Retail Pharmacy Technician requirements:

  • Area: Must be able to work in the Beverly Hills, CA area
  • Licensure Requirements: Must have valid, open and active California Pharmacy license.
  • Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Years of Experience: Must have 1-2 years of recent retail, prior authorization and/ or Oncology experience
  • Schedule: Weekdays, Weekends- Full -Time
  • Length of Assignment: Temporary to Permanent
  • Pay: Depending on Experience
  • Background/ Drug Requirements: Must be able to complete a background check and drug screening. Additional health screening required.
