Located roughly 70 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, where the Willamette and Columbia rivers meet, Portland has a population of about 587,000 people, making it the 29th largest city in the U.S.

Portland is known around the country – and even the world – for its great use of land and its investment in light rail. Because of this – as well as the many bicycling, hiking and walking trails and abundant parks, the city is often referred to as one of the “greenest” (environmentally friendly) cities in the world.

Portland’s climate has warm, dry summers and wet, cool (some would say chilly) winters. Its wet weather and climate make it great for growing roses and, therefore, Portland is often referred to as the “City of Roses.”

The city is also known for its liberal political views, as well as for its beer and coffee enthusiasts – it is home to several independent microbreweries and microdistilleries.

Visitors and residents alike enjoy a jaunt to Forest Park, the largest wilderness park that’s within city limits in the U.S. It covers more than 5,000 acres. Portland also is the place to go see the world’s tiniest park: Mill Ends Park, a circle of two feet in diameter. Washington Park (west of downtown Portland) is the location of the Portland Japanese Garden, the Oregon Zoo and the International Rose Test Garden.

Three Oregon state parks are located within Portland’s city limits. They include Tryon Creek State Natural area (its creek is filled with steelhead trout); Government Island State Recreation Area, located on the Columbia; and Willamette Stone State Heritage Site, located in the West Hills area of the city.

As for indoor pursuits, the Portland Art Museum offers the city’s largest collection of fine art, including modern and contemporary. The Pearl District downtown is full of art galleries, as well.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (also known as the OMSI) on the banks of the Willamette (across from downtown), is home to the USS Blueback, the submarine used in the film The Hunt for Red October.
