Work-Life Balance for Pharmacists
Discussions about work-life balance these days are more apt to produce a sardonic laugh than anything else. Many people believe having a healthy work-life balance is just out of reach. Surveys show that most professionals work more than 50 hours a week, and more than half work 65 or more hours a week. It is not easy to do, but you need to make the effort for your mental, physical and emotional well-being.
If you are a pharmacist, there are a number of things you can do to achieve more of a balance between your work and your personal time, many of which are fairly simple to do. Here are a few.
Maintain a routine.
Establishing a routine helps you save time by helping you get done what you need to more efficiently. For example, having a morning routine makes things easier and quicker in the morning.
You should also have a routine for when you arrive at work, such as making a to-do list and prioritizing your tasks, checking email and checking with co-workers.
Care for yourself.
To begin with, make sure you get enough exercise. Any is better than none, but ideally you should try for an hour a day of physical activity. Exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Research has shown that exercise can improve your cognitive processes, helping your thinking and memory. It also improves your mood, helps to reduce stress and makes you feel better and more energetic. Moreover, it can help to prevent a number of diseases, including cardiovascular problems and diabetes.
You should also make sure to get enough sleep. Most people need seven to eight hours a night. Research has also shown the importance of sleep in helping you to focus and remember things. During sleep, our brains are helping to assimilate the knowledge and experiences we have accumulated during the day.
Eat a healthy diet. Avoid processed foods and foods that are high in fat or sugar.
Learn to let go.
Leave work at work. When you are done with work for the day, forget about it. Don’t take it home with you. Do not check email.
Pare things down.
Review all your activities during the week with an eye toward the things you can eliminate. Look for time wasters; things that are essentially busy work. Look at how much time you spend on Facebook or surfing the net or watching TV where you can make better use of your time.
Get organized.
Determine what is important in your life. Use these goals as a guide for planning what you need to get done. Set priorities and create a schedule for the amount of time you will spend on those priorities. Try to stick to the schedule.
