5 Tips for Surviving a Tough Day in the Pharmacy
Working in a pharmacy can be stressful for both pharmacists and their staff. The workload can be heavy, and there is always the pressure to avoid mistakes.
But there are measures you can take to help reduce stress. Here are a few.
1. Keep things organized
Allowing your workplace to become more disorganized will drive up stress levels and increase the odds that a mistake will be made. You need to make every effort to maintain an organized workplace, keeping paperwork and medications where they belong. You don’t want to have to go hunting for documents. You should also have a workflow system in place to reduce redundancies and wasted effort.
2. Set priorities
You need to determine the most important tasks or projects that need to be accomplished and get to them first. The highest priority should go to tasks that are both important and urgent. Too often, people simply do the tasks that are at the top of their to-do list, without regard to importance. They may feel like they are busy, but are not accomplishing a great deal because they handle mostly incidental things.
3. Avoid procrastinating
The longer you put something off, the more stress it will create. It will always be at the back of your mind. When a problem arises, take care of it right away.
4. Take breaks
Take breaks throughout the day. This is a good way to relieve stress. Just taking a few minutes away from work will give your mind and body the rest they need to re-energize.
Deep breathing
If you cannot take a break, deep breathing is also a great way to relieve stress. Our breathing actually plays a role in our mental state. Practice breathing into a count of four, holding your breath for a count of four, and then exhaling to a count of four.
To handle stress, it is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Getting enough sleep and exercise, and eating a healthy diet, will work to increase your physical and mental stamina, as well as your energy level.
